What is Jock Itch?
Jock itch, medically called tinea cruris, is a superficial fungal infection that usually affects the groin, inner thighs and nearby skin folds. Warmth, sweating, friction and trapped moisture can create conditions in which fungi thrive.
It often causes an itchy, red or discoloured rash with a more noticeable outer edge and may gradually spread across adjacent skin.
Common Signs & Symptoms
Dermatological indicators to help you identify the condition early.
Itchy Rash
Persistent itching or irritation in the groin or upper inner-thigh area.
Red or Discoloured Patches
The affected skin may appear red, brown or darker/lighter than surrounding skin.
Raised Outer Border
The rash may have a clearer, slightly raised or scaly edge.
Scaling & Flaking
Dryness, flaking or peeling can occur around the affected area.
Burning / Irritation
Sweat, heat and friction may increase discomfort.
Gradual Spreading
The rash may expand outward onto nearby inner-thigh or groin skin.
How Jock Itch Spreads
Understanding transmission vectors is key to preventing reinfection and protecting your household.
Skin-to-Skin Contact
Direct contact with infected skin can transfer fungal organisms.
Shared Towels & Clothing
Contaminated towels, underwear or clothing can spread infection.
From Infected Feet
Fungus from athlete's foot can be transferred to the groin through hands, towels or clothing.
Heat, Sweat & Moisture
Tight clothing and prolonged dampness encourage fungal growth and persistence.
